Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, is a gem waiting to be discovered. From its stunning natural landscapes to its vibrant city life, Almaty offers a unique blend of experiences that leave you enchanted.

Our adventure started with a flight from Mumbai to Almaty. After reading several reviews, we decided to fly with Air Astana though it had a stop over at Delhi instead of FlyArystan, which had received quite negative feedback.

Day 1: Arrival - Embracing the Almaty Vibe

We landed in Almaty at 2:30 PM, and thanks to our pre-booked cabs from Booking.com, our driver was already there waiting for us as soon as we arrived. This seamless transition from the airport to our hotel set a positive tone for the rest of our trip. If you're like me and enjoy organizing your trips, here are some key things you'll need, to make your journey smooth and enjoyable:

  1. Yandex Taxi: This is Almaty's equivalent of Uber and a reliable way to get around the city. Download this, the drivers usually accept only cash.

  2. Local Currency (Tenge): I recommend bringing dollars and exchanging them for Tenge at local exchange houses for the best rates.

  3. Google Translator: Download this handy offline tool that can translate both Russian and Kazakh to English, making communication much easier.

  4. Local SIM Card: Grab a local SIM card either at the airport or in the city to stay connected throughout your trip.

Additionally, I've shared the contact details of some trusted drivers further in the post. These tips will help you navigate and enjoy Almaty with ease, allowing you to focus on the adventure and beauty of this amazing city.

We stayed at Resident Hotel Kazybek Bi, a charming hotel known for its excellent location, comfortable rooms, and friendly staff. Our friends chose Grand Sapphire Hotel, which also boasts a central location, cozy rooms, and a spa with wellness services. Both hotels provided a great base for our Almaty adventure, ensuring we were well-rested and ready for each day's activities.

The evening was all about settling in, taking a leisurely walk, and getting a feel for the city. There's something magical about the first day in a new place – the anticipation of adventures to come. We were tired from the journey, so we ventured out for dinner. I loved the Mangal Doner for their delicious chicken sandwich. Since we had vegetarian friends with us, we also headed to Spice Mantra to enjoy some Indian cuisine. The combination of familiar flavors and the new experiences made for a perfect end to our first day in Almaty.

Day 2: Exploring Shymbulak: A Day of Diverse Landscapes and Culinary Delights

We began our morning by catching a ride via Yandex to the Shymbulak Ski Resort, aiming for a day filled with scenic views and vibrant experiences. At the ticket counter, we found ourselves purchasing passes for the gondola, which serves three main stops along the mountain. Pass cost about 5,000 tenge, which felt like a bargain considering the breathtaking views that awaited us.

Our gondola journey took us through three distinct terrains, each more mesmerizing than the last. The first stop immersed us in lush green pine forests, a refreshing escape that felt like stepping into a living postcard of vibrant greens. As we ascended to the second stop, the landscape shifted to a breezier, more barren terrain, offering panoramic views that stretched endlessly under the clear blue sky. However, it was the third and final stop that truly captured the essence of Shymbulak—snow-clad mountains that glistened under the sun, creating a stark contrast against the blue of the sky.

At the summit, we took the opportunity to capture this moment of awe. With a drone buzzing overhead, we unfurled the Indian national flag, creating a memorable video against the stunning backdrop of Kazakhstan's snowy peaks.

Descending from the heights of Shymbulak, we stopped at Big Chef, a local gem that served an amazing array of vegan and non-vegetarian dishes. It was, without a doubt, the best meal of the trip. The flavors were rich, the ingredients fresh, and the ambiance just perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. Make sure to check out their restroom; not only is it clean, but it also displays a delightful sense of humor

As the day wound down, we encountered a small hiccup while trying to return. Unable to find a Yandex ride and facing exorbitant prices from local drivers, we opted for a more adventurous return via a local bus. At just 200 tenge per person, it was not only economical but also gave us a slice of everyday life in Almaty, adding an authentic end to a day filled with extraordinary sights.

Day 3: The Tranquil Beauty of Issyk Lake and the Thrilling Trails of Turgen Gorge

We arrived at Issyk with a picnic in tow—homemade thepla, lays, whiskey and gin tonics, a delightful combination of Indian flavors and a refreshing twist. Finding a shaded spot near the lake, we enjoyed our meal surrounded by the breathtaking landscape, the quiet atmosphere making the flavors seem even more delicious.

Next, we ventured to Turgen Gorge, known for its lush landscapes and the famous Bear Waterfall. The hike to the waterfall was both refreshing and slightly challenging, offering stunning views and the refreshing sounds of nature. The Bear Waterfall, a popular attraction in the gorge, is a powerful testament to the natural beauty of Kazakhstan, cascading down the rocks in a misty spray that invites awe and admiration.

After our hike, we stopped at a quaint cafeteria located right next to a flowing stream. While the food options were limited, the coffee here was exceptional. Sipping on a hot cup while listening to the gentle flow of the stream and soaking in the peaceful vibe of the surroundings was truly worth it.

Day 4: A Cultural Tour through Almaty's Heart

We started our day at the Ascension Cathedral, a stunning Russian Orthodox cathedral known for its bright yellow facade and beautifully detailed woodwork. The cathedral, one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world, is not only a place of worship but also a masterpiece of architectural design. After exploring the cathedral, we strolled through the surrounding park, enjoying some local ice cream. Though it was just average in taste, the experience of eating ice cream in the serene park setting added a sweet note to our morning.

From there, we headed to a local museum, where the entry fee was a modest 500 tenge per person. Inside, we found a treasure trove of local history and art. The museum showcased a range of exhibits from ancient artifacts that tell the story of Kazakhstan’s nomadic cultures to more recent historical events that shaped the nation. The displays were well-curated, providing a deep dive into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

Next, our journey took us to the Green Bazaar, a vibrant marketplace that is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Almaty's bustling local life. Here, we shopped for everything from fresh produce especially Walnuts to local herbal tea. The bazaar was a sensory overload with its vivid colors, enticing smells (of meat), and the clamor of vendors and shoppers haggling over prices.

In the evening, we visited Kok-Tobe, a popular recreational area located on a hill with panoramic views of Almaty. Although it is renowned for its scenic cable car ride and The Beatles monument, our visit was somewhat disappointing. The attractions seemed more catered to children, and as adults, we found the entertainment options limited and slightly underwhelming.

Day 5: Magical Canyons and Glamping under the Stars

We ventured deeper into the breathtaking landscapes of Kazakhstan, starting with the mystical Charyn Canyon. Known as the Grand Canyon's little brother, Charyn offers an equally impressive, though less trodden, array of stunning geological formations.

Our adventure began with a 45-minute walk through the canyon, surrounded by its dramatic rock formations that seemed to tell tales from millennia gone by. An old local saying captures the magic of Charyn: touch the canyons and make a wish, and it will come true. Our guide Zaure engaged us further by encouraging everyone to use their imagination to interpret the shapes of the rocks. The guesses ranged from puppies to couple kissing, sparking laughter and a light-hearted atmosphere among the group.

At the canyon's end, we were greeted by the serene Charyn River, its gentle waters a perfect counterpoint to the ruggedness of the rocks. The tranquility here was palpable, a soothing reward after our explorative trek.

The return journey added a touch of rustic charm—we hopped into an ancient Soviet truck that had seen better days but refused to retire. Bouncing along in this antique of a bygone era, we couldn't help but chuckle over its stubborn resilience and the stark contrast to the sleek modern vehicles we're accustomed to. On our way we also clicked pictures of Mooni Canyon but the troop was too tired to explore any further.

Later, we made our way to the much-anticipated Kolsai National Park, where we had booked glamping accommodations at Kolsay Nomad. Nestled in the heart of pristine nature, our glamps offered a luxurious overnight experience. The only way to book these exclusive retreats is through their Instagram page, adding an element of exclusivity to our adventure.

Our day ended under a canopy of stars, surrounded by the sounds of nature in Kolsai, glasses of whiskey, some indian chaknas marking a perfect close to an adventurous day.

Day 6: A Serene Morning Trek and the Rugged Beauty of Kaindy Lake

The early risers in our group embarked on a peaceful morning trek to the nearby Kolsai Lake, which was conveniently close to our glamping site. The tranquility of the morning, with the soft light filtering through the dense pine trees and the quiet lapping of the lake waters, provided a meditative start to our day.

For breakfast, we faced the reality of limited vegetarian options in this remote area. Luckily, we had brought along dehydrated meals, which included a Misal Pav; Kakra; Thepla. There we were, in the middle of a Kazakh forest, rehydrating and savoring gujrati dishes. We called it the "Kolsai Kakra,".

Our next adventure was to Kaindy Lake. Known for its submerged forest and crystal-clear waters, Kaindy is one of Kazakhstan's natural wonders. However, reaching this enchanting destination involves a bumpy ride through rugged terrain. The journey can be quite challenging, particularly for those with back issues, the elderly, or pregnant individuals. Despite the rough travel, the stunning beauty that awaits at Kaindy Lake is undeniable and well worth the effort for those able to make the trek.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the surreal sight of tree trunks jutting out from the lake's surface, residue of a forest flooded after an earthquake in 1911. The water's clarity and the mysterious beauty of the submerged trees create a hauntingly beautiful landscape, making Kaindy one of the most photogenic spots in the region.

Day 7: Cultural Immersion and Scenic Discoveries

We bid farewell to our cozy accommodations at Kolsai Nomad and ventured to the nearby Saty Village for a deeper glimpse into local life. The village, nestled in the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains, offers a window into the traditional lifestyles of the region’s inhabitants.

Upon our arrival, a local lady welcomed us into her home and introduced us to baursak, a traditional Kazakh fried bread. Warm and fluffy, baursak was the perfect comfort food to accompany our next activity. Equipped with these delicious treats, we set up a picnic in a nearby lavender field, the air filled with the sweet fragrance of the blossoms. The scene was picturesque, and the ambiance was enhanced by the strains of desi music, under which we taught our Kazakh driver and guide some lively Bollywood dance moves, adding fun and laughter to our cultural exchange.

After our delightful picnic, we continued our exploration to Black Canyon. Unlike the more famous Charyn Canyon, Black Canyon offers a unique, rugged beauty with its steep cliffs and narrow passages. This lesser-known gem is steeped in geological history, formed over millennia by the forces of water and wind, carving out a dramatic landscape that is both awe-inspiring and somewhat mysterious.

Day 8: A Leisurely Day in Almaty with Culinary and Cultural Delights

Our final day was reserved for relaxation, offering us the perfect pace to enjoy the city's culinary and cultural highlights. We kicked off our day with lunch at El Mexicano, a favorite among both locals and visitors for its authentic Mexican cuisine. The lively atmosphere and delicious flavors made for an excellent start to our leisure day.

After lunch, we made our way to the famous Green Bazaar. Following our market visit, we stopped by Rehat, a local chocolate shop well-regarded for its rich selection of handmade chocolates. This stop sweetened our day with its delightful aromas and flavors.

Continuing our cultural exploration, we visited First President's Park and Independence Park. The former is beautifully landscaped and provides a serene escape from the urban environment, while the latter is filled with significant monuments and statues, offering a narrative of Kazakhstan's proud history and its strides towards independence.

We concluded our evening with dinner at Del Papa, a reputed Italian restaurant in Almaty. Known for its authentic Italian dishes and cozy ambiance, it was the perfect setting for our final dinner in the city, allowing us to savor excellent cuisine as we reflected on our wonderful experiences in Kazakhstan.
